The goal of the Vītols Fund is to provide scholarships for capable, dedicated young people from low-income families for studies in the universities of Latvia. The situation in the Latvian rural schools helped the founders of the foundation define the goal to which the foundation targets its activities – to grant scholarships to those secondary school graduates from rural areas, whose family material circumstances prevent them from continuing the studies in a university. Fund scholarships are granted to those who have good grades in their reports (average marks of 7 or higher), have succeeded in academic contests and who come from low-income families.

MICS started the 2011 school year a few weeks ago in the MICS Boarding House building. Today, February 1st we opened our new school building with a grand birthday party celebration. In 2006 MICS opened with 10 first graders in a borrowed room at the Mission Hospital. Today we opened our new school classrooms with 100 children in grades Reception (kindergarten) to Grade 6. Each class now has a beautiful spacious room.

The MICS theme for 2011 is from Luke 1:37. “With God Nothing is Impossible”. The teachers and students planned and presented a wonderful program that praised the Lord and thanked Him for the many blessing He has given MICS. Truly this school building would not have been possible without God. It is indeed a miracle!

Finally……….. Birthday cake was then enjoyed by all.

Every day at the Auce Crisis Centre Namiņš, several dozens of Auce’s little citizens receive dinner and clothing for free. These are children who have become victims of domestic violence, who lack and who are missing parental care and love.

Living conditions for children in rural areas are often very difficult – unemployed parents and their destructive habits prevent children from receiving wholesome food, clothing and medical care. State social services are not able to help the families to the extent necessary because the provided benefits are not sufficient to provide for children and their schooling. The funds provided are also quite often are used to satisfy parental weaknesses rather than the needs of their children.

We have started to plan the organizing, packing and shipping of a cargo container to MICS. This is a HUGE project. It will involve the help of many people and many hours of work collecting and packing donated items. It will also involve several fundraisers to collect the needed funds for the shipment of the cargo container.

There are so many needs at MICS. It is extremely difficult to get many of the items that are essential to running a quality school. this container will allow us to send many of these items that they can not get over there.

click on picture to see newspaper article

The project was kicked off by Cheryl Timmerman and Rita Jansen of St. Rose, IL. They organized a scavenger hunt to raise money for the container and collect some of the needed items (link to news paper story). This is the 4th scavenger hunt they have organized. Money raised from previous events went toward scholarhips and the new Toyota for the school. Thanks Cheryl and Rita for your commitement and support to the school and children of MICS!!
